Ingredients that fit. Vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, biotin, vitamin A and most minerals are dosed in milligrams or micrograms. A gummy carries these at research-relevant amounts without strain, because a few hundred milligrams is a comfortable fraction of the mass budget.
Ingredients that do not. Collagen is the headline case. A systematic review of eleven trials in 805 patients found the skin studies used hydrolysed collagen at 2.5 to 10 grams daily for eight to twenty-four weeks. A gummy holds 50 to 200 milligrams of it. You would need somewhere between fifteen and a hundred gummies to reach a studied dose, which is not a formulation problem anyone can solve.
And the sugar is not a mistake. Two to four grams per serving is what makes a gummy a gummy. A study on gummy composition determined an optimal base of 4.3 grams of gelatin and 6.3 grams of syrup, and found that changing the sweetener load measurably changed the texture. Take out the sugar and you no longer have the product.
Why the Format Exists at All
Worth understanding, because the limitation comes with a real advantage that gets lost in the criticism.
A patent covering gummy compositions states the constraint plainly: gummy dosage forms suit active ingredients that are of very low dose, can withstand the high thermal stress of manufacturing, and have low intrinsic taste. The cooking stage reaches temperatures that many compounds simply do not survive. Collagen peptides are studied in powders and drinks rather than gummies for exactly this reason.
So the gummy is not a worse capsule. It is a different delivery vehicle with a narrow specification, and it was designed around compliance rather than potency. The reason it exists is that people take gummies and forget capsules.

A recent randomised trial, two of whose authors work in research and development at a commercial collagen company, used 5,000 milligrams of collagen peptides daily for twelve weeks, with vitamin C and E at 12.6 and 0.58 milligrams alongside. That funding link makes the dose more telling rather than less: when the people selling collagen design a trial to show it working, they use five grams. The collagen alone weighs more than twice a whole gummy.
Collagen synthesis support via vitamin C. This fits easily. Vitamin C is a required cofactor for the enzymes that build collagen, dosed in milligrams, and a deficiency genuinely impairs collagen formation.
Hair and nail strength via biotin. Fits, and the problem is different. Biotin at the doses these products use interferes with laboratory tests, as our piece on vitamins for hair and nails sets out, and the benefit in people who are not deficient is weak.
Antioxidant support via vitamins A, C and E. Fits comfortably. Whether it produces a visible cosmetic result is a separate question with thinner evidence than the label implies.
Skin structure via silica. Fits by dose. The evidence base is considerably thinner than for vitamin C, and honest products should say so rather than listing it alongside better-supported ingredients.
Three Reasonable Guesses That Turn Out Wrong
Three beliefs shape most of the spending here, and each one is a reasonable guess that turns out wrong.
I assume a gummy version is just a smaller dose of the same thing. Sometimes, and sometimes it is a different thing entirely. When the studied dose will not fit, manufacturers do not shrink it proportionally; they include a token amount and keep the ingredient name on the front. A tenth of a dose behaves like a tenth of a dose, but a fiftieth behaves like nothing.
I assume the sugar is just there for taste and could be removed. It is structural. The sugar and the gelling agent together are what give a gummy its texture, and sugar-free versions substitute sugar alcohols that bring their own digestive effects. Step Three: Count the Sugar Across Everything You Take
Two to four grams looks trivial on one product. If you take a beauty gummy, a multivitamin gummy and a probiotic gummy, you are at six to twelve grams of added sugar before breakfast.
Realistic Expectations
Setting these correctly prevents most of the disappointment.
Skin turnover runs roughly a month, hair grows about a centimetre a month, and nails replace themselves over six. Nothing you swallow changes those clocks, so anything visible takes months and is easy to attribute wrongly when it arrives alongside seasonal change or a new routine.
The realistic outcome from a well-formulated beauty gummy is nutritional support for processes your body already runs. That is a smaller promise than the category makes, and it is the one the format can actually keep.
There is also an attribution problem worth naming. That is not a reason to distrust your own eyes. It is a reason to expect the effect of a nutrient you were not short of to be smaller than the effect of the summer.
Compliance Is Why the Format Keeps Winning
Given the constraint, it is worth asking why gummies keep taking share from capsules, and the answer is not that buyers are being fooled.
